Fine 19th Century Insect Slides.
This is a collection
of 8 fine Victorian slides, mostly mounted in the 1860s and 1870s. The slides
prepared by the famous microscope manufacturers, Smith, Beck & Beck. The
“6, Coleman St.” address dates them later than 1865. These slides are
beautiful preparations of the Tongue of the Humble Bee. The beautiful Edmund
Wheeler slide is of the same vintage, and shows the outer, covering wing of
this famous and well studied beetle.. To my eyes, the most spectacular is the
crimson-paper-covered slide labeled “Day Moth” and “Urania Ryphens”.
This slide contains part of a wing of the beautiful Sunset Moth from
Madagascar, today called Urania riphens. The various parts contrast strikingly
against the opaque black background of the slide. The lower photo shows the
four slides of Norman (c1814-1893), all from the 1870’s, except the slide on
the right which is of a later vintage. These excellent preparations of wings:
one from another day-flying moth (Urania sloaneus),
and one of bloemerii with metallic blue scales.
