English Survey Compass
A classic 19th century, all brass,
English survey compass. This by W.H. Harling, London. This type compass is often referred to as
"The India Model" since it was so named in an 1880 Stanley catalogue. Stanley extolled its
virtues for use in Colonial India. It has the "Schmacalder" prism which allows the user to read
the compass card while taking a bearing. The brass is finished in a black oxidizing. The compass
and lid are in excellent condition. The leather case is in only fair condition, with part of its
strap missing and the flap stitching coming apart. An excellent survey item.
Ship's
Compass.
This is a gimbaled brass ship's compass. It is in good working
order and good condition noting some small chips to the red and green
paint on the brass balls.
